Deck Staining in Halifax & HRM

A deck stain fails early when it is applied over dirty, grey or damp wood. The preparation — washing, drying and sanding — is most of the job.

We prepare the wood properly, then apply stains suited to its condition and exposure, from transparent finishes that show the grain to solid colours that refresh older decks.

What This Service Covers

Only what we genuinely do — nothing padded.

Deck Conditions We Restore

Greyed, weathered wood

UV breaks down the surface fibres of unprotected wood. Washing and sanding bring back a stainable surface.

Peeling or worn previous stain

Failed coatings are removed or feathered so the new stain absorbs evenly instead of flaking with the old one.

Water no longer beading

When water soaks straight in, the protection is gone — the right time to re-stain is before damage goes deeper.

Mildew in shaded areas

Shaded boards grow mildew; washing treats it before it is sealed under a new coat.

Why Professional Work Matters

Longer deck life

Stain protects against moisture cycles that crack and rot unprotected wood.

The right product for the wood

Age, species and exposure all affect which stain will actually last.

Preparation done properly

Most stain failures are preparation failures. We do not skip that part.

A finish you will want to use

A freshly stained deck changes how the whole backyard feels.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to stain a deck?
Dry, moderate weather — typically late spring through early fall in Nova Scotia. Wood must be fully dry before staining.
How long after washing can you stain?
Usually a few dry days so the wood reaches the right moisture level. We schedule around this.
Transparent, semi-transparent or solid?
Newer wood shows well under transparent finishes; older or patchy decks often look best in semi-transparent or solid. We advise per deck.
Can you stain a brand-new deck?
New pressure-treated wood usually needs a weathering period first. We will tell you honestly if your deck should wait a season.
How often does a deck need re-staining?
Horizontal surfaces wear fastest; every few years is typical depending on product and exposure.
